Art, history and natural environment in the Empoli – Valdelsa area
Empoli is in the famous province of Florence. With the other municipalities of the Empoli – Valdelsa area, it is part of the tourist area and museum system known as Renaissance Lands. The system is a great way to learn about art, history and nature, admiring the precious elements and buildings dating back to the Renaissance period.
There are very important art sites in the territory of Empoli and famous historic characters, such as the painter Jacopo Carrucci, known as Pontormo, and the musician Ferruccio Busoni, came from this town. In the historic centre of Empoli, the main historic buildings can be found around Farinata degli Uberti Square (the character is quoted by Dante, in Canto X of the Inferno). The buildings include Palazzo Ghibellino (with the Paleontological Museum), Palazzo Pretorio and the Collegiate Church of S. Andrew. Here is the Collegiate Museum, one of the oldest church museums, with masterpieces of Tuscan art from the XIV, XV and XVI centuries.
There is plenty of variety in the landscape. Gentle plains with woods make way to farmland with vineyards and olive groves. Cypresses grow everywhere and are the symbol of Tuscan countryside.
